His lineage is a hindrance: it’s difficult to make a name for yourself when your father – Paul Simon – has already made it for you.

Still, there are advantages: without the influence of his family line, it’s unlikely that Harper Simon could have drawn such an all-star cast of session musicians to help him cut his debut album.

And it’s also unlikely that we’d be hearing what’s a pleasant but ultimately, pretty modest collection of singer-songwriter material.
