The Gunners started poorly, Hull going 2-nil up within eight minutes – goals from James Chester and Curtis Davies.
But a stunning free-kick from Santi Cazorla gave the Londoners hope and a way back into the game on 17 minutes and Laurent Koscielny scrambled in the equaliser on 71 minutes.
The game then went into extra time, setting the scene for Aaron Ramsey to become a club hero, putting away a great chance on 109 minutes to put his side in front – a lead they would hold onto.
It was a great comeback, manager Arsene Wenger explaining afterwards that the win represented a “vital moment in the life of the team”.
