Brennan said the majority of bats are covered but that “strangely enough, this protective coating would only cover half the edge of the bat,” before calling on the ICC to ban all types of covering.

The statement came in the light of a claim from Channel 9 that Kevin Pietersen used silicon tape on the edges of his bat to negate the Hot Spot camera.

Silicon tape is commonly used on bats at all levels of cricket to prevent cracking and breakages.

Alastair Cook and the ECB have demanded apologies from the Australian broadcaster.
