With Australia in control, the heavens opened up just before play started and lunch was called early.
Afternoon session
Finally some play, and James Anderson got rid of nightmatchman Peter Siddle with a beauty. Smith was loving it in the middle, and went to his first 100 in a Test with a special six over Johnathan Trott’s head. In the same over, Trott forced Brad Haddin to play onto his stumps.

Evening session
Quick runs were the order of the day’s third stanza, with James Faulkner using his one-day skills to good effect in his first contribution of the game. Swann took Mitchell Starc hitting out, but Ryan Harris had no such trouble smacking the spinner about to get 33. Clarke declared one ball later on 9-492. Watson 176, Smith 138no. Anderson 4-95.
England had to survive an hour and a half, and did just that, closing the extended day at 0-32 from 17.3 overs.
