Why? He’s made history by becoming the first Australian to go in the NHL draft.
He was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round with the 89th overall pick.
You might wonder how Cardiff, Wales-born Walker managed it given that there are hardly any rinks in Australia, with Ice Hockey very much a minority sport. Well, the 20-year-old who was raised in Sydney moved to the Czech Republic in 2007 and spent most of his formative hockey years there.
It isn’t Walker’s only record; he was also the first Aussie in the American Hockey League – one below the NHL – when he played for the Hershey Bears (who happen to be Washington’s feeder team), where he scored five goals in 43 games.
This is one Aussie talent worth keeping an eye on.
