The heatwave has prompted authorities to keep pools open later than usual and one council is considering hiring even more lifeguards as people continue to flock to the beach. Volunteer lifeguards tend to only patrol the beaches until the end of April.

Ben Domensino, a senior meteorologist with Weatherzone, spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald about the warm weather.

“For Sydney and Canberra, this was the warmest week this late in the season on record,” he said.

The cause of this heatwave is high-pressure systems in the Tasman Sea forcing cold fronts further south than usual.

Meteorologists are confident that this May will see a lot of temperature records in Oz toppled – especially in the south east.
