“Everyone talks about New Year’s Eve, but Australia Day is even worse,” NSW paramedic David Morris told AAP today.

Extra staff are on duty, extra supplies brought in, and a makeshift hospital has been erected in Sydney’s Olympic Park in readiness for the Big Day Out music festival which rolls in to town on Thursday.

Alcohol bans are set to come in to force along Coogee and Clovelly beaches and double-demerit points will be in place on the roads too until 11.59pm on Sunday.

No fewer than 2500 officers will be deployed across NSW as the authorities look to ensure that Australia Day goes off with as little incident as possible.
