Australia has dropped out of the race to host the 2018 World Cup, choosing to concentrate on its bid for 2022.

The move leaves the US as the only non-European bidder left in the race.

“It became apparent that there was a growing movement to stage the 2018 World Cup in Europe,” said Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke.

“The FFA [Football Federation Australia] has displayed an exemplary level of solidarity with Europe and the European bidding nations.”

Aussies have a good chance of hosting the World Cup 2022, however. FFA chairman Frank Lowy said recently that the feedback he was getting about Australia’s campaign for the tournament was positive.
