Defending champion Roger Federer has reached his eighth Australian Open semi-final with a straight-sets victory over fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.
Federer took a large step towards his 17th grand slam crown with a consummate 6-1 6-3 6-3 victory in Wednesday’s quarter-final.
In an ominous warning to his rivals, Federer produced his best form of the championship to outplay his friend and compatriot in every department.
Wawrinka seemed to be helpless in the opening set which slipped by in only 29 minutes.
With Federer maintaining a first serve percentage around 70 per cent for the entire match, Wawrinka had few options but to submit.
He established only one break point for the match, which he failed to convert, while Federer made five from his seven opportunities.
Federer will play either Tomas Berdych or Novak Djokovic – each of whom beat him in his last two grand slams – in the semis
