Warm and hot weather brings out the sugars in Australian fruit, and growers, particularly in the vineyards of Sunraysia, are keen to make the most of it and get fruit picked before it is destroyed by the sun.

That’s good news for people like Irish backpacker Daniel McDermott who told ABC he would rather be picking in boiling temperatures than spend the winter back home.

“I just put my mind somewhere else. I just imagine them in Ireland now and it just doesn’t bother me,” he said. “(The other pickers) are always crying it’s too hot and they are in pain and it’s just like ‘get on with it, just get on with it’.”

Much of Victoria will again face heatwave conditions in the coming days, with temperatures in some towns in the state’s north-west likely to exceed 40 degrees.
