FIFA president Sepp Blatter said on Monday he is “really disappointed” at the poor performance of Bafana Bafana.

Speaking after a visit to the site of Cape Town’s 2010 stadium, he said South Africa was awarded the World Cup in 2004, and “now four years later, the national team is not better than it was in 2004. I would even say it’s not so good. I am really disappointed,” Blatter said.

He said he found Bafana Bafana’s decline since it won the African Cup of Nations in 1996 “incredible”. “I cannot understand it.”

Blatter visited the 68000 Greenpoint stadium in Cape Town which is set to host one of the 2010 Soccer World Cup semi-finals.

He was accompanied on site by former president FW De Klerk, Western Cape Premier Lynn Brown and city Mayor Helen Zille.

On Tuesday he will visits Soccer City in Johannesburg and meets former president Nelson Mandela. On Wednesday he is scheduled to meet ANC president Jacob Zuma.
