The week long festival of beer events at bars, pubs and breweries across the capital will feature live brews, tastings and tours as well as numerous food and beer tasting sessions.
In partnership with food and drink sponsor There’s A Beer For That, this year’s London Beer City will have a real focus on food, demonstrating how well beer compliments a variety of cuisines and flavours through a series of bespoke food events during the week.
Events
While white wine with fish is universally known, beer is also a fantastic partner for all types of fish because of its flavour complexity. With a focus on fish There’s A Beer For That will host an intimate Beer Club over a five-course Beer Club at The Bull in Highgate, a gastropub renowned for its high-quality food and beer menu.
Hosted by London Beer City organiser and beer writer Will Hawkes – the unique matching event will take attendees on a carefully guided journey through the world of food and brews, sampling malts and smelling hops as they experiment with each different delicious fish dish. With hop smoked salmon, mackerel pate with a beer jelly and a lemon and mascarpone cheesecake topped with caviar on the menu, the event on 15 August is not one be missed. Tickets are £40 and include five courses sampled with six beers to compliment, including Fourpure’s dry hopped pilsner and Harveys Imperial Russian stout. Tickets are available here.
If you can’t make to the event you can still join in – Will is set to host There’s A Beer For That’s popular weekly Beer Club on Twitter at 8pm on 12 August, where he’ll be recommending and discussing best beer London has to offer. Anyone can join in using the hashtag #BeerClub.
Additional food and drink events
Other food and beer highlights include doughnut and beer matching at The Draft House Birdcage, a central London beer hunt, a cheese and beer workshop taking place in five of the city’s finest breweries in the space of a week with expert cheese monger Ned Palmer and the return of the London Craft Beer Festival.
A Belgian themed evening will offer rare beers and delicious food at The Dove in Broadway Market. There will be an Italian supper and beer club at Clarkshaws, and join award-winning beer writer Des De Moor on a stroll through London’s remarkable brewing history.
London Beer City, which first took place in 2014 and takes place in the same week as the Great British Beer Festival, aims to highlight the versatility, diversity and quality of the beer being produced inside and outside of London. “We want to offer something for everyone,” says organiser Will Hawkes, author of Craft Beer London. “London Beer City captures the excitement of what’s happening with beer at the moment. There’s so much going on.”
David Cunningham, programme director for There’s A Beer For That adds: “Through our partnership with London Beer City, we want to inspire Londoners to learn more about the beauty of beer and discover first hand why beer and food are the perfect pairing. There are so many different styles of beer available that suit a wide variety of meal occasions – and our Beer Club Live at The Bull and #BeerMatch activity throughout the week aims to show just that. Whether you are a beer novice or a pro, now is the time to experiment with beer and food.”
