The attacks, which took place today in the city of Leige in eastern Belgium, reportedly happened when a man in his 40s dropped the explosive devices from a rooftop. The man, who is now deceased, has been named as Nordine Amrani, 32.

The attack is alleged to have been part of an escape plan for someone under police custody in the city courthouse.

Injured people include a group of youngsters between the ages of 17 and 20 who have been rushed to hospital with shrapnel wounds.

Gunmen have also been reportedly opening fire in the city centre near the busy Christmas market, which attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Medics from the Netherlands have been drafted in to assist with the injured. Two of the assailants are said to be still at large, and the general public is being urged to stay indoors. However, Peter Mertens a Belgian government official has claimed there was only one attacker and the incident was not being considered as a terrorist attack.
