Sure, it wasn’t a complete surprise that Uruguay beat Italy but it was the circumstances of the win which were controversial.
Enter Suarez.
The Liverpool star who just days ago tore England apart has gone and done it again, chowing down on an opponent for the third time in his career.
This time he tried to take a chunk out of Azzuri defender Giorgio Chiellini.
FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the striker who claims he “bumped” into the Italian, although replays – and the bite marks on Chiellini’s shoulder – suggest otherwise.
“These are just things that happen out on the pitch,” said a defiant Suarez. “It was just two of us inside the area and he bumped into me with his shoulder.”
Football’s world governing body will likely want to deal with the matter quickly so focus returns to what’s happening on the pitch and if found guilty he could be banned for up to 24 games – or two years..
Uruguay won the game 1-0, not that anybody noticed, and will face Colombia in the last 16 on Saturday.
Costa Rica topped Group D after drawing 0-0 with misfiring England.
