Egg ’em on

Ah, the Scotch egg. Mocked by many, misjudged by most. But the accomplishment that is a boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat and breadcrumbs gets due attention next week when the third Scotch Egg Challenge commences at The Ship in Wandsworth.

The UK’s leading restaurants and pubs are submitting entries in the hopes of being crowned king of eggy goodness, and everything from gull to quail eggs and smoked venison to wild boar meat will be in contention. Pop along to The Ship to find out who wins (and, better, to be in with a chance of tasting the entries).

Back to school

New Covent Garden joint Chuck’s Clubhouse is all set to soft launch before officially opening in October, recreating Nineties American college culture cool (now there’s a convoluted concept) with frat-style decor (sporting memorabilia, preppy-attired staff) and the student diet of pizza and beer. Also expect a phone on every table so you can call and flirt with hot guys and gals on the other tables. Here’s hoping they’re as good-looking as everyone is in American college movies.

Boozy breakfast

How do you make the formula for brunch even better? Make it a rum brunch. Notting Hill’s The Rum Kitchen is now serving bottomless rum Bloody Marys and BYO vinyl along with its traditional West Indian brunch menu every day, 12pm-4pm. This is breakfast, Jamaica-style.
