The 39-year-old bodyboarder escaped with a small bite after fighting the shark off, and yelling at it to let the shark know that he ‘wasn’t happy with the situation’.

Speaking to ABC Radio, Mr Berry explained that at first he thought the shark was a dolphin or seal, and that after it bit him, the shark circled him, intending to return.

However, Mr Berry was not in the mood to be eaten, and stood up for himself.

‘It wasn’t going to swallow me whole, that’s for sure, but I knew he could do some damage and he could hurt,” he said.

He was helped to the shore by others, but he has suggested that it will be a while before his wife lets him return to the same stretch of beach.
