Australia’s east coast has seen an increase in shark detections, along the beaches north of Sydney. Last year there were 13 shark attacks reported on NSW beaches.

The government is hoping that the system will provide an immediate warning system to lifeguards.

If an object more than six foot in length is detected, a warning signal from buoys will be sent to lifeguards via an app.

The lifeguards would then sound an alarm, telling all swimmers to get out of the water until the shark had moved on.
