Fans of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones novels (and subsequent movies) will be in for a bit of a shock after the novelist has released some extracts from her new book. The extracts confirm that Bridget’s former husband Mark Darcy – played by Colin Firth in the movies – died five years earlier and she now has a 30-year-old toyboy.
Mad About The Boy will be out on October 10 and it is the first thing we hear about Bridget’s Life after 1999s release The Edge of Reason, which was the second novel after Fielding’s first book Bridget Jones’ Diary, published in 1996.
Next to the fact that her husband died, you can also learn from the extracts, that she gave birth to two children Mabel and Billy, whose father Mark Darcy was.
First reactions on twitter show fans shocked: “One word for Helen Fielding: why?!” says Chloe Helen Lemmon for example and many others have reacted the same.
It remains to be seen if there will be a third movie adaption for Mad About The Boy with Oscar-nominated Renee Zellweger returning as Bridget and maybe we’ll get to see Colin Firth as Mark Darcy one last time then.
