British tourist shot dead in Honduras by muggers attempting to steal his camera

Omer Kaya, 33, was shot dead in the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula after he refused to hand over his rucksack when a group of muggers attacked him. He was shot in the neck as he tried to run away, local newspaper El Heraldo has reported.

The attack happened around 11AM local time on Tuesday. A bag was found nearby containing an iPad, mobile phones, cash and credit cards.

Kaya had been taking pictures in the city and was due to leave on Friday to return to the UK to celebrate his birthday on Sunday.

Honduras is one of the most dangerous countries on earth, with the highest murder rate in the world and San Pedro Sula itself is one of the most violent Honduran cities.
