The RCMP in New Brunswick (@RCMPNB) named Justin Bourque, 24, as their suspect and tweeted a photo of him decked out in military gear, carrying two rifles.

Constable Damien Theriault said the suspect opened fire after police arrived in north Moncton in response to an emergency call placed at around 7.30pm (11:30pm UK time). He has asked the public not to reveal any information about the locations or operations of any officers online.

Recent tweets on the RCMP feed advise residents in the Moncton Coliseum area and Pinehurst subdivision to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Moncton mayor George LeBlanc echoed these warnings and emphasised the need for ‘complete co-operation’ with police and other emergency personnel.
