My job involves… everything. I own a restaurant with two bars and my job includes everything from managing events, working on reception greeting and seating people, running food to tables and taking orders, making cocktails behind the bar, running cocktail classes, accounts, admin. Everything. We have plenty of staff to support all of these roles, but I like having an active role as it allows me to have a clearer idea of how the business is running.

I got my job by…
working hard. I started doing this in NZ age 17, picking up glasses in a large bar. I loved the team work aspect of the job and have worked in the industry ever since.

My day-to-day work includes…
as above, I’ll come in around midday, work at the back of house admin chores until 6-7pm then move front of house to be customer focused until we close, then more admin.

The most rewarding part of my job is…
working with guests, ensuring they have a great experience, and training and working alongside staff.

The most challenging part of my job is…
 managing staff

My advice for anyone looking to get into this industry is…
it’s a hell of a lot less glamorous than it sometimes looks from the outside, but it’s very rewarding, especially mentally when you see people enjoying what your creating around them.
