The day after England beat Peru in their final World Cup warm-up on home soil the national stadium was transformed into a punching pantheon for a fight feverishly promoted as ‘Unfinished Business’.
It was Nottingham’s Froch who left the happiest, keeping the IBF and WBA super-middleweight titles he put on the line and leaving the controversial ending to their previous encounter well and truly relegated to the past.
Last November’s bout in the more modest Manchester ended before Groves thought it should have in the ninth round, but the referee this time didn’t need to finish the count when Froch clocked him with a brutal shot in the eighth round.
On the undercard, James DeGale dominated America’s Brandon Gonzales in their IBF title eliminator which earns him a shot at Froch.
