Overall, Asian and Middle Eastern airlines performed very well, dominating the top 10.

Qantas, which ranked third in 2008, was again outside the top ten, finishing 11th.

Virgin Australia was 15th overall and Air New Zealand came 16th.

When it came to budget airlines, Jetstar ranked fourth behind AirAsia, offshoot AirAsia X and Norwegian.

The high-profile awards were announced at the Farnborough International Air Show in the UK.
