Overview: Guests stay in bungalows set in a lush courtyard, while local food is served up by the sisters – well, two of them, as the other two have moved abroad – in the adjoining house.

Wow factor: The sisters are lovely ladies who can’t do enough for their guests. A huge breakfast of pancakes, eggs, toast and coffee sets travellers up for the day, and you can enjoy a feast of traditional Burmese fare in the evenings.

Rooms: Basic, but comfy. The walls are paper-thin and the bungalows too dark to read in come nightfall, but everything is clean and, if you complain loudly enough, chances are you’ll get a hot shower.

The fans rarely work, however, so don’t visit in summer if you can’t put up with the heat.

Bill please:  £10pn, including a big breakfast.
