Kaizer Chiefs’ Itumeleng Khune walked away unscathed after writing off his Nissan X-Trail over the weekend.
The accident happened near Southgate Mall in the south of Johannesburg just a few hours after he was voted Newcomer of the Year at the SA Sports Awards in Bloemfontein on Friday.
Khune won R50,000 to add to the other prizes he has picked up since becoming famous last season.
Sport24 reports Khune is one of many top soccer players to end up in road accidents. Last year road accidents were responsible for the deaths of Fernando Matola (Black Leopards), Gift Leremi (Orlando Pirates), Vumile Dladla (ex-Golden Arrows) and former Witbank Aces star Steve Makua, while many soccer fans are still mourning the loss of Pirates’ ace striker Lesley Manyathela five years ago.
The 21-year-old Khune won the Absa Premiership Players’ Player of the Year in 2007/08, the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season and was voted Kick Off Footballer of the Year, but the car he was given for capturing the Chiefs’ Player of the Year award is now a wreck
