It was followed by a number of aftershocks that finished at 7am.
The earthquake hit two weeks after a 5.7 magnitude tremor, which caused the collapse of cliffs in Sumner and damage to homes and businesses.
There have been no reports of damage to homes or injuries following yesterday’s quake.
Understandably residents and visitors are concerned.
