Thousands of people watched a video showing Bale being manhandled by Chinese security as he attempted to reach blind activist Chen Guangcheng, in eastern China.
Now a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry has said that Bale should be embarrassed by his actions.
He said Bale was invited by director Zhang Yimou to attend the opening ceremony of the film The Flowers of War.
“He was not invited to fabricate news or shoot film in a certain village,” said the spokesman. “I think if you want to make up news in China, you will not be welcome here.”
Bale was filmed by a CNN crew attempting to visit Chen. The activist documented China’s population control abuses, including forced late-term abortions and sterilisations.
He was jailed for allegedly masterminding an attack on a government building, something Chen denies.
