A group of filmgoers at Liverpool’s Odeon One got a shock when they discovered that highly-rated French movie, a throwback to Hollywood’s Golden era, is in black and white, has no dialogue, and is shown in a smaller format than usual.
An Odeon spokesman has said of the incident: “Odeon Liverpool One can confirm it has issued a small number of refunds to guests who were unaware that The Artist was a silent film.
“The cinema is happy to offer guests a refund on their film choice if they raise concern with a member of staff within 10 minutes of the film starting.”
Michael Hazanaviciuis’s film, which won at the Golden Globes and picked up a number of Bafta nominations this week, might have found favour with the critics but it has yet to prove itself a success with the punters and has only banked $27 million worldwide.
