The scene A short stroll from London Bridge and Borough Market, as well as the Tate Modern, citizenM is our city’s branch of a group of Dutch boutique hotels on the rise in Europe and expanding in London – versions in Tower Hill, St Paul’s and Shoreditch are in the pipeline.
Although there’s a slightly executive vibe thanks to an array of Apple computers for travelling guests on business towards the back of the large open-plan space, there’s a classy and relaxed feel here, without being pretentious or snobby – citizenM has the atmosphere of a cool London members’ club that’s not exclusively for posers or wannabes.
The company brands itself as “affordable luxury for the people” and has proved itself popular with a range of clientele. The interior design is (though I hesitate to say it) pretty funky, with quirky art installations and colourful furniture.
The grub Snacks and light meals with an international flavour, including sushi (from £5.95), sandwiches (£3.95), quiches (£3.25) and cakes (from £1.75).
Behind the bar A bulging cocktail list with plenty of inventive concoctions that barman and mixologist Tom throws together from his visits to nearby Borough Market. Get stuck into a dark and stormy of gold rum, lime and ginger.
Bill please Cocktails are £7-£10; draught lager and cider £3.95-£4.50 a pint.
Verdict A hotel bar with personality and casual cool that’s affordably luxurious.
