A minimum 40p per unit price has been set, with multi-buy deals as seen in supermarkets also coming under David Cameron’s new rules which are sure to set him on a collision course with the drinks industry. And heavy drinkers.

The Prime Minister intends for the new legislation to be introduced in the Autumn, after a summer period of consultation, with the new minimum price to come into practice in 2014.

For example, recent analysis of the proposed legislation has shown that common two-for-£20 deals on 20-can crates of lager, which sell the booze at a price closer to 20p per unit, would have their price tag almost doubled.
