The hour-long episodes are  being set up at the FX network with the show to focus on the character of Detective Marge Gunderson, played in the original film by Frances McDormond and who won a Best Supporting Oscar for her role.

The Coens’ film told of a car dealer with money problems (William H Macy) who hires a pair of crims to kidnap his wife as part of an insurance scam to help ease his woes. Predictably, it does not go to plan, and someone, memorably, ends up face first in a wood chipper.

The pilot for the new show is to be penned by Noah Hawley, who exec produces alongside the Coens.
