Marc Warren puts in a decent performance as the defiantly imprisoned WWII veteran. But neither his attempts to escape nor the clash of wills with Richard Brake’s sadistically menacing guard justify Emma Reeves’ bitty and ultimately unnecessary stage adaptation of the novel which spawned the 1967 Paul Newman film.
