A British soldier who raped three teenagers and tried to abduct three schoolgirls has been jailed indefinitely.

Jonathan Haynes, 30, of Northampton, was told he would spend at least 11 years in jail after being convicted of rape, kidnap and attempted kidnap at Bristol Crown Court last month.

Haynes raped two teenagers in Chippenham, Wiltshire, another in Pontypridd, south Wales, and also tried to kidnap two girls on a country lane in Wiltshire.

Sentencing Haynes to an indeterminate sentence for the protection of the public, Judge Neil Ford QC described him as a "clever and cunning predator" and warned he might never be released.

He said: "You have raped three young women and in each case you subjected them to multiple indignities and the attack on each victim was sustained.

"You went to great lengths to eradicate your crimes and you greatly damaged your victims.

"You have expressed no remorse at all for your offending and you still deny you were responsible for the offences.

"The manner of your offending leads me to the conclusion that you remain an extreme and continuing danger to young women."

Haynes was a Royal Logistics Corps lance corporal, based at Buckley Barracks, near Chippenham. He also worked part-time as a doorman at the Market Tavern in Stroud, Gloucestershire. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed Haynes is no longer a serving soldier.

In his first attack, in September 2009, Haynes abducted and raped a 16-year-old girl after she had left a nightclub in Chippenham.

Then two weeks later, he raped an 18-year-old University of Glamorgan student in Pontypridd.

In February 2010, he tried to snatch two schoolgirls from a country lane near Chippenham.

Weeks later, Haynes kidnapped and repeatedly raped a 17-year-old girl in Chippenham.

Speaking after the case, Det Ch Insp Bob Hamlin, from Wiltshire Police, commended the five victims for their bravery during the investigation and trial.

"Although we can never fully comprehend the trauma that they suffered, we hope that this sentence will help to give them some peace of mind," he said.

Haynes was found guilty of a total of six counts of rape, two of kidnap and two of attempted kidnap.
