Golden Balls was receiving lucrative offers to play a 10-match guest stint in Oz, with the Glory, Melbourne Heart and Central Coast Mariners the most keen.

“I got the chance to chat to David, and of course I asked him about coming to Australia,” Sage told footballaustralia.com.au after the encounter at the musical based on Victoria “Posh” Beckham’s Spice Girls.

“He looked me in the eye and basically said, ‘That would be nice, but it’s too far away from my businesses’.

Cashed-up French club Paris St-Germain is the frontrunner for the service of Beckham, who said he wanted one “last challenge” after finishing up with the LA Galaxy this month.

“It would have been great to have him at Perth Glory, but it looks like that won’t be happening,” Sage said.

“I just don’t think he’ll be coming to Australia, full stop.”
