The Prime Minister will announce the step at the Conservative Party convention in Birmingham and insiders say he hopes the social networking site will bring him closer to his constituents.

“The trouble with Twitter, the instantness of it – too many twits might make a twat,” he told Absolute Radio in 2009.

He used the same line after Tory MP Aidan Burley tweeted that he thought the Olympic opening ceremony was “leftie multi-cultural c–p”.

Tweets are already made on Cameron’s behalf through @Number10Gov, but with his own account the PM can make political statements that civil servants can’t.
