The Blues will now take a commanding lead going into the home leg next week at Stamford Bridge thanks to Victor Moses’ first half opener, headed in from a Frank Lampard corner.
Basel pressed for an equaliser and were rewarded for their efforts in the closing stages of the match when Cesar Azpilicueta was judged to have fouled Valentin Stocker, with Schar scoring from the penalty spot with three minutes of normal time left to play.
Rafa Benitez’s men were not done though and after winning a free kick on the edge of the box in injury time, David Luiz, playing in midfield rather than his usual defensive position, guided the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net to secure two away goals and, more importantly, the victory.
The second leg next week at Stamford Bridge will see Chelsea is a commanding position to make the final and pick up their first piece of silverware this season.
