And instead of announcing it on Twitter, like many celebrities are doing now, the 37-year-old chose to file it in The Times newspaper’s births, marriages and deaths column.

The advert read: “The engagement is announced between David, son of Mr and Mrs Ian Mitchell, of Oxford, and Victoria, daughter of Dr Anne Coren and the late Mr Alan Coren, of London.”

A spokesman for Mitchell, who also hosts 10 O’Clock Live, said the star “feels very happy and incredibly lucky”.

The pair revealed that they were dating in late 2010, although they have kept the relationship quiet.

But Coren, 38, tweeted earlier: “Thank you for your nice tweets this morning. I’m very happy.”

Coren, who presents quiz show Only Connect on BBC4, is also a prominent poker player and often writes and broadcasts about the game.

Mitchell also responded to well wishers on Twitter, saying: “Having received so many lovely messages today, I’m finally coming round to the internet.

“Thank you all. I’m incredibly happy.”
