Albanese was restricted to one word answers to questions from listeners, but when asked if Labor would make gay marriage happen, he said “yes”.

His office back-peddled later to say he was suggesting it was Labor that is historically behind reforms to issues that prejudice homosexuals.

An Albanese spokesman said: “History shows that it has been only Labor governments that have advanced the rights of the gay and lesbian community.”

The Prime Minister said last week, after ousting Julia Gillard, that he wanted to hold a public vote if Opposition Leader Tony Abbott won’t agree to a conscience vote for Coalition MPs on the issue.

Gillard was adamant during her time in office that “marriage is between a man and a woman”.
