What: Hindus celebrate their festival of lights by lighting lamps and candles, and, of course, letting off fireworks.
Where: Pretty much any town in India.
When: October 17.
Why: The burning of lamps and candles has many meanings in Hindu tradition, one of these is the victory of good over evil.
Do it because: It’s a joyous occasion for Hindus, and cities in India become a cacophony of noise, colour and fun during the festival, making it a fabulous time to be travelling around the country – even if transport in India can be a bit sketchy at times.
How much: Free. Wander the streets and watch the action unfold.
