The match was a five-set thriller, living up to its billing, and the win, Djokovic’s second Wimbledon crown, saw the Serb regain the number one ranking from Rafa Nadal.

He came through 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 to win Wimbledon’s first five-set final since 2009 and end Federer’s hopes of a record eighth Wimbledon title.

“It was close, you know,” Federer told reporters. “Novak deserved it at the end, clearly, but it was extremely close.

“I already have seven. It’s not like I need another one.”

Most of the 15,000 strong Centre Court crowd had been willing on the Swiss – playing his first grand slam final since winning Wimbledon in 2012 – and it saw him fight back from 5-2 down in the fourth set to take it to a fifth and final set.

Djokovic however held his nerve and marked the win by eating some of the Centre Court grass.
