It’s set on a green cliff, overlooking the Douro River in Baião province, and through the hotel windows, practically all you can see are vineyards and forests.

The white, minimalist building is strikingly modern in a region where many of the hotels and resorts tend to have a more rustic, heritage look. The hotel’s Restaurante Eça serves some interesting regional dishes, and there’s a choice of three bars for an after-dinner tipple or two.

Rooms The layouts of the rooms are a little odd, with all the furnishings facing in the same direction, towards the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. But everything becomes clear in the morning, when the early-hours views over the rolling hills are simply unbeatable.
