Police urged people to stay away from the Adelaide city centre after they cordoned off a block on King William Street.
Rodney Clavell, 46, had evaded police since 20 May and he was described as “dangerous”.
There four women inside the building with him – it is believed they were hostages – and they came out around midday, local time.
SA Police said: “Police can confirm four women have been escorted by the police from the business on King William Street where Rodney Clavell is believed to be inside. The women walked out without incident and are currently speaking with police.”
Soon after they sent a robot into the building and found his body. He had been holed up from 1am and is believed to have shot himself.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Dickson said Clavell’s death was being treated as a death in custody and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
