Bertie Longworth, who lives in Kearsley near Bolton, has been ordered not to kick his football against his garden wall by two cops who came to his house and took details including his name and date of birth.

Neighbours had complained about the noise that his footy practice was causing.

Bertie’s mum Janice has said of the surprising police intervention: “Its just ridiculous that the police should come round over an eight year old playing football when there must be more serious things going on.

“I would have thought a phone call would have sufficed. It is the start of the school holiday and would rather my kids be playing out than stuck in. You’d think lads would be encouraged to play.”

In an age where obesity, particularly among the young, is ever increasing, her point of view is easy to understand.
