England debut three players and win their first Ashes series toss – will a new look for the new year make a difference in Sydney?

The last time England debuted three players was in Nagpur, India, in 2006 when their captain made his first appearance and with this series aside it’s served them well. 

Leg-spinner Scott Borthwick only came into the squad as cover for Monty Panesar, whose calf didn’t come good in time (presumably).

Meanwhile, big Irishman (England and Wales?) Boyd Rankin gets a nod ahead of other bored towering paceman Steven Finn and Christ Tremlett who have been waiting for a chance this series – Tim Bresnan gets the axe.

The other first-timer is Gary Ballance, who comes into the middle order as Joe Root gets the punt – he’ll arrive at the crease in front of all-rounder Ben Stokes and keeper Jonny Bairstow, who keeps his place ahead of Matt Prior.

A new team for a team year for England, while the Aussies start the game with same 11 for the first time ever in a five-Test series.
