Food

English food hasn’t had a good reputation over the years, but that is changing and there are a number of excellent restaurants – especially in London.

Many pubs have been converted in ‘gastropubs’ where the fare is much more upmarket.

Some traditional English foods to try include:

  • Fish and chips
  • Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding
  • Balti
  • Whitstable oysters
  • Cumberland sausage
  • Pie and mash
  • Cornish pastie
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Cream tea
  • Bakewell tart
  • Crumble and custard

Drink

The English love a cuppa and have been drinking tea for more than 350 years. According to the Tea Council, Britons drink 165 million cups of tea a day although sales are starting to fall. It seems more people are turning to healthier options like herbal tea, or more fashionable warmers such as lattés.

Make sure you try some traditional ale while you are in England. Ales are pumped by hand from the cellar and served unchilled — but that doesn’t mean they are warm.
