Mirvis will take over from the current chief rabbi Lord Sachs.

“The Chief Rabbinate Trust can this evening confirm that the Consultative Group has endorsed a recommendation by the Working Group to appoint Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, as the eleventh Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, subject to appropriate contractual agreement.” said The Chief Rabbinate Trust in a statement.

Ephraim Mirvis of The United Synagogue, who was born in South Africa, appears regularly on a YouTube channel called Ask the Rabbi. He has previously served as Chief Rabbi of Ireland from 1985 to 1992.

“I welcome the appointment of Rabbi Mirvis as another powerful voice for British Jewry. I look forward to working closely with him as a partner on areas of common interests to the Jewish and wider community.” said Laura Janner-Klausner of the Movement for Reform Judaism.
