Bolton Wanderers midfielder Muamba collapsed from a cardiac arrest in the 41st minute of his team’s FA Cup quarter final against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The game was called off after Muamba was rushed from the pitch, while still receiving resuscitation.

When Muamba’s father told his son that the game had been called off, the midfielder wanted to know why. His father told him, “because of you”.

Muamba is still in recovery from the incident. His condition is regarded as “serious”, but he is able to communicate and recalls the events at White Hart Lane on Saturday – near miraculous when you consider that his heart had been stopped for two hours as medics battled to revive him.

“In effect, he was dead in that time,” said Bolton’s doctor Jonathan Tobin.
