There are no reported deaths or significant injuries but some 6,000 firefighters have been mobilised to help deal with the situation.
Authorities have said conditions in Victoria are at their worst since Black Saturday in 2009 in which wildfires killed 173 people and destroyed about 2,000 homes.
There are emergency warnings for residents in Wallan, Darraweit Gium, Monegeetta, Romsey, Chintin, Bylands and Kilmore.
Emergency crews are also fighting blazes in South Australia and New South Wales.
