Mr Wran was premier of Australia’s most populous state from 1976 until 1986.

During the time that he was in office, he never lost an election.

Tributes from Australia’s leaders have poured in, with Prime Minister Tony Abbot saying that Mr Warn was “one of the most significant figures of his generation”.

As reported in The West Australian, government frontbencher Malcolm Turnbull was a friend of Mr Wran’s, although their political views differered.

“He was a true believer, a doer, a reformer and a builder,” Turnbull said.

According to The Guardian, NSW premier Mike Baird has Wran’s family with the offer of a state funeral, which they have accepted. The date is yet to be confirmed.
