Yoann Galeran was swimming out into the water at Nhulunbury in western Australia at night time to get a moored dingy when the saltie grabbed him by the head and dragged him under.
It then attempted a death roll, but Mr Galeran, relying on his instincts alone, literally fought for his life, punching away at the crocodile in its body and its head until it let him go and he could get away to safety.
“If it was a bigger crocodile, I wouldn’t be talking to you now,” Mr Galeran said afterwards.
He said how it felt like a rock had landed on his head as the croc came in and attacked, and that he was only few metres away from the boat.
He punched the crock several times in the head at which point it let go of him and he made his extremely lucky escape.
